STACKIT Automation Service General Availability & Daily Volume Backups

Section titled “STACKIT Automation Service General Availability & Daily Volume Backups”

We are excited to announce that the STACKIT Automation Service is now Generally Available (GA)!

In addition to reaching GA status, we have introduced Daily Backup Retention Policies for volume management. Customers can now automate both short-term snapshots and long-term volume backups using the existing Volume Recovery Point Management template.

      • General Availability (GA): The STACKIT Automation Service is officially out of Public Preview and ready for production workloads.
      • Daily Volume Backups: Backups are now supported as a recovery option. They are stored in dedicated, isolated storage to provide maximum protection against hardware failures.
      • Daily Backup Retention Policy:
        • Automatically creates a backup from the latest available snapshot once per day when triggered.
        • Backups are automatically pruned once their retention period ends (default retention: 14 days).
        • Easily toggle or adjust backup retention periods at creation or anytime afterwards via the STACKIT Portal and API (backupRetentionPolicies).
      • STACKIT CLI Support: Full support added for volume automation management and backup configuration via the CLI under stackit beta volume automation create.
      • Terraform Provider Support: Manage volume automation resources and backup retention policies declaratively with the STACKIT Terraform Provider (v0.117.0 and above).
      • Multiple Recovery Options: Combine high-performance volume snapshots for fast state restoration with daily volume backups for long-term resiliency.
      • Dynamic Label-Based Targeting: Automatically apply backup and snapshot policies across all matching volumes (including newly provisioned ones).
      • Flexible Execution Triggers: Run tasks on custom schedules or execute them on demand.
      • Integrated Retention Policies: Prevent storage bloat with automated rotations for both snapshots and daily backups.

We continue to expand our library of automation templates and integrations across more STACKIT cloud services. If you have feedback or feature requests, please reach out via the STACKIT Help Center.

We are excited to announce the Public Preview (Beta) of the STACKIT Automation Service!

The STACKIT Automation Service empowers you to effortlessly design, schedule, and execute automated tasks within your cloud environment. By leveraging a library of predefined templates, you can now streamline the management of core STACKIT resources—starting with disk volumes.

      • Fast Recovery Points: The service utilizes volume snapshots to create high-performance recovery points, allowing for near-instantaneous state restoration.
      • Dynamic Label-Based Targeting: Instead of manually targeting individual resources, the automation dynamically discovers and applies policies to all volumes matching your specified labels.
      • Flexible Execution Triggers: Automation tasks can be scheduled to run automatically at custom intervals or executed on-demand instantly via manual triggers.
      • Integrated Snapshot Retention Policy: Built-in safety guardrails automatically manage your snapshot rotations. When enabled, the system prunes the oldest snapshots to maintain your defined volume limits and prevent backup creation failures.

Our journey to simplify your cloud resource management is just getting started. More automated templates and features are already in the pipeline. If you want to share feedback or suggest a new automation use case, please reach out to us via the STACKIT Help Center.
